The time is upon us for the beginning of Ligue 1, with Toulouse and Monaco opening the action tonight. Tomorrow Saint-Etienne will face OGC Nice, in what looks to be an interesting match. In terms of the league table, Nice is 66/1 to win Ligue 1, coming in 3rd last year; Saint-Etienne finished 8th and are 200/1.
Yet Nice comes into this fixture the underdog. Let’s see how these two clubs stack up.
Saint-Etienne – (6/5)
OGC Nice – (5/2)
Draw – (11/5)
Goal Over/Under – 2.5
Over – (27/20)
Under – (4/7)
Both Teams to Score
Yes – (1/1)
No – (3/4)
Working backward through these odds, it’s expected both teams will not put up points. What of note here is last season Nice scored 63 goals and only allowed 36, where Saint-Etienne scored 41 and allowed 42. With the odds in Saint-Etienne’s favor, the expectation is that they flip the script in the opening week of the season.
That’s putting a lot of faith in the only major addition between the clubs, Lois Diony. Diony brings his 10 goal performance from Ligue 1 rival Dijon to his new club Etienne, who averaged a 1-1 finish (with a fitting record of 12-14-12).
Outside of new attacker Diony’s scoring potency, none of his new clubmates topped 7 goals. Nice, on the other hand, had 4 scorers of 7 or more goals, including Mario Balotelli’s 15 majors. If anyone’s scoring for OGC, it’s going to be him.
Saint-Etienne 1 – 3 OGC Nice
With Nice expected to place in the top 5 again and a number of prolific boots on their offense, there’s no reason to believe they won’t burst out of the gates here. The odds are mistakenly in favor of Etienne’s favor, and it’s just sitting there for you to capitalize on.
